George Koutalieris - Silent Messages
George Koutalieris is a solo musician from the Greek capital of Athens. Known for his work as the guitarist of well-loved Greek pop rock outfit Ριφιφί through the 1990s, Koutalieris has found new renown in balearic circles for his sinuous balearic/indie/lo-fi sound.
In ‘Silent Messages’, Koutalieris showcases his peculiar fusing of guitar and digital synthesis with four original compositions which render like moving paintings, void of singular perspective; timbres appear and disappear, ending before they’ve begun, spun from the silver twilight of Koutalieris’ nonchalant musical vision.
Take eponymous track ‘Silent Messages’, where digital organs and delays carve out the limits of a homogenous, imperceptible space from which Koutalieris’ guitar work can shine, its melodies sounding out like the balearic cousin of some Nordic Noir detective theme; or ‘In The House of Troisi’, with its endearing digital bleeps atop reverb-washed, 80s-indie top string triads, boarding music for Gatwick to Ibiza circa 1992, the nebula of unceasing cloud out the window.
‘Sit Comfortably Next To You’ is hand percussions and nylon guitars, but also digi drums and VSTs, where a potential leitmotif surfaces to dissipate back into softly rolling cloud, nylon guitar jostling, playfully, with meandering melodica; an affirmation of the joy of love, of being in it, and of being in its presence.
Last track ‘Dreams in Broad Daylight’ is the sunset number, rolling along the waking dream highway, conjuring late 90s Japanese video game music with cybernated synths and wide-panned hand drums, a joyful march on a Spring afternoon, wistful and present, broad yet profound.
With George as writer, arranger and principal player, this LP is a moment that evokes the spontaneity of solitude, abdicating the conventions of generic narrative to deliver an introspective, unusual EP that delights in the joys of the prosaic. We’re proud to present ‘Silent Messages’ by George Koutalieris, available digitally on Balearic Ensemble.
